Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT)
EMAT (Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer) technology is an alternative method of generating and receiving ultrasonic energy. These are transducers that are made up of coils that are placed in close proximity to the test piece. The coils produce a magnetic field that interacts with the metal, producing a deformation in the surface of the material. This deformation produces the wave of ultrasonic energy, allowing to detect discontinuities and corrosion in conductive materials. The transducer, and the fact that there is no need for surface preparation, is the main difference in comparison to conventional ultrasonic testing.
